本書係五年前過世的知名英國史家修．崔佛羅伯男爵（Hugh Trevor-Roper，1914–2003）依據埃德蒙．拜克豪斯(Sir Edmund Trelawny Backhouse，见http://www.douban.com/subject/3001821/)的回憶錄手稿撰寫而成,但不敢直接採信他的鋪陳，他參考數十份其他資料，甚至比對李蓮英的日記。修．崔佛羅伯不止比對埃德蒙．拜克豪斯回憶錄內容的真偽，也用史家眼光透視埃德蒙．拜克豪斯的成長與性格養成。此書其實就是作者修．崔佛羅伯求證並耙梳埃德蒙．拜克豪斯的回憶錄所做的心得報告。
